Tehachapi High Schoolers Plant 4,000 Daffodil Bulbs Around Town

My hat is off to all the Tehachapi High Schoolers that planted the 4,000 daffodil bulbs around their school and town.

I know it isn’t a million, billion or trillion but it is still a whole bunch! The high school entrance already has several hundred blooming. Another real show for the community will be when the 100s start blooming along the south side of Valley Blvd and west of the newest traffic light right along the bike path. They put in many, many hours and I thought to myself what an excellent exercise in delayed gratification. I think they were planting those in October and November and had to wait 4-5 months just to see if they even survived but not only did they survive they are thriving. The kids were part of the Interact Club which is the High School equivalent to Rotary. Congratulations THS, Interact and Rotary.

If anyone thinks they have a brown thumb then get started with bulbs -It’s so easy, even a caveman high-schooler can do it ;)

Seriously, daffodils don’t need any water from us and neither the gophers nor any other animal eat them and they come back year after year. So lots of folks come into the nursery this time of year and want to plant daffodil bulbs now – because all those yellow blooms are inspiring – but we have to disappoint them and say daffodils have to be planted in the fall. Then we tell them “here are some bulb you can plant now and these bulbs will bloom throughout the next 6 months until it is time to get the next round of daffodil bulbs”. Most are disappointed and don’t take us up on the invitation. Why? well, all there is to look at on the rack are pictures of what the uninspiring, brown, dirty, bulbs will be in the future and in the Spring it is not very appealing ’cause everyone wants color NOW. Bulbs are super easy, and I like to refer to their potential like an orchestra: there are so many instruments that ebb and flow during their season which is what a full complement of bulbs will do – you could easily have different bulbs blooming 9 months out of the year – small, tall, dainty or huge – they all perform when it is they’re time.
