People often want to know what the process of landscape design and then installation will look like. Explaining the steps clearly helps people decide if the services we offer are what they are looking for. In this article, landscape designer Anna Smith outlines the process of working with her to design your perfect landscape.
The Landscape Design Process
- The consultation – Through an interview process I will learn about your personal lifestyle and vision for your garden space. We will also discuss budget and maintenance levels and concerns. At this time a deposit of 25% of the estimated design cost will be made. Please allow up to three hours for the initial consultation.
- Site analysis – I will photograph, measure, and study your site’s existing conditions, natural features, soil type and health, and micro-climates. For a small job this can be accomplished in one visit, but for larger jobs or a more demanding job site this may take several visits.
- Design development – A preliminary garden design recommendation will be presented in ‘Plot Plan’ view , (shown below) that includes the proposed garden structures and plant selection, broken down by zones. After feedback and adjustment, the final plan will be approved by the client.
- Final Plan- When the final plan is delivered the client will also receive a booklet that includes seasonal maintenance tips for the garden as well as pictures of each plant used in the design. A spread sheet with all the plants, their recommended sizes and current cost is included. At this time the balance will be paid.
- Time Frame- The design process usually takes around three or four weeks from start to finish, depending on the complexity of the project.
- Installation – Whether you are a “do-it-yourselfer” or plan to have the garden professionally installed, I am available to help you decide which route to take and make referrals. The nursery has a list of landscape professionals that you can interview and choose from as well.
